The students at Santo Niño learn the basics and fundamentals of basketball - how to play the game, how to pass, to dribble, run the court and shoot the ball. The purpose of our basketball program is to teach kids how to play the right way and to accept both victory and defeat graciously. It is our goal that they learn discipline, skills and teamwork, along with how to play offense and defense.
Coaches try to prepare their players both mentally and physically. Conditioning is emphasized so they can be able to run up and down the court. We encourage our players to have a positive, willing and winning attitude because they need to be prepared both mentally and physically to win games. We realize that being prepared mentally and physically is equally essential in life.
We emphasize that basketball is a team sport, which means it requires contribution and cooperation from every kid in order to play well and win. They learn that everyone must focus, work together and fulfill their individual roles for the common good of the team. Coaches teach the players never to give up and to persevere. If they give it their best shot and learn lessons along the way, they come out winners!
Our Basketball Program is open to all girls and boys in 3rd – 6th grade. Our 5th/6th grade teams play in the Albuquerque Parochial League. The rest of our basketball teams play the Santa Fe Athletic League and all the games are played here at our school. We believe that all kids should have the opportunity to play basketball in elementary school, if they choose so there are no cuts and everybody makes a team.
